Winter Skin Care Tips

February 16, 2015 by Pinnacle Dermatology

winter skin care

Dry air and cold temperatures can damage your skin. It’s important to take the appropriate steps in your daily routine to help nourish and moisturize your skin – especially during these Michigan winters.  Fortunately, there are ways you can keep your skin healthy and looking great even during the winter.

At Pinnacle Dermatology, your skin is our top priority. We know the importance of healthy, well-kept skin year round. Our medical staff can help treat many of your skin woes, and we’re here to customize treatment options based on your individual needs. Contact Pinnacle Dermatology today to schedule your consultation, or stop by our Birmingham office.

Avoid Long, Hot Showers

It feels good to step into a shower on a cold day. However very long, hot showers should be avoided. The hot water can dry out your skin. You should limit your showers to 10 minutes and stick to lukewarm water.

Eat Plenty of Vitamin C Rich Foods

Vitamin C can help increase collagen production, which is essential for healthy skin. That is why you should include plenty of vitamin C-rich foods in your diet. Dark leafy greens and citrus fruits are examples of some of the foods you should include in your diet. Vitamin C not only helps keep your skin healthy, but it can also strengthen your immune system.

Use Oil-Based Creams

It is better to use oil-based cream instead of lotions to moisturize your skin. Oil-based creams help fight skin dryness by locking in the moisture. Make sure you moisturize your skin twice a day. Ideally, you should moisturize your skin once in the morning and once at night.

Eat Plenty of Omega 3 Fatty Acid Rich Foods

Studies have shown that people who are deficient in omega 3 fatty acids are more likely to experience skin dryness. Omega 3 fatty acids, which are found in fatty fish, walnuts and flaxseed, can help prevent skin dryness.

Use Mild Cleansers

Using cleansers that contain harsh ingredients, such as ammonium lauryl sulfate and triclosan can cause serious damage to your skin. They can also cause skin dryness. That is why it is best to use mild cleansers that are free of harsh chemicals.

Dress In Layers

When you are heading out in the cold, it is important for you to dress in warm layers. You also want to make sure you wear gloves, hat and scarves. Dressing in layers not only helps keep you warm, but it also protects your skin from the cold and windburn.

Continue To Wear Sunscreen

Many people think that it is not necessary to wear sunscreen during the winter months. However, the ultraviolet rays from the sun can still be very strong during the winter months. That is why it is important to apply a sunscreen before going outdoors – even when it’s snowing!
