When Do You Need Skin Cancer Surgery?

Skin cancer occurs when an irregular amount of skin cells grow out of control in a person’s skin and turn malignant. This malignancy can become cancerous and spread throughout the body increasing one’s risk of mortality. It is one of the most ubiquitous types of cancers in existence. While this may sound alarming, there are many ways to lower the probability of getting this type of cancer. There are various techniques to treat skin cancer effectively. Getting skin cancer surgery can prevent cancer from spreading and also remove dangerous growths.

Skin Cancer: Causes and Risk Factors

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. There are several factors that cause skin cancer. Being overexposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and tanning beds can increase the chances of a person developing skin cancer. Those who have a family history of skin cancer should be vigilant in limiting sun exposure to help offset any risk of developing warning signs. Individuals that live in locations where the sun shines frequently such as Hawaii and Florida are advised to apply sunblock to exposed skin on a regular and consistent basis. Wearing long protective layers, hats, sunglasses, and sunblock can play an important role in reducing skin cancer.

When You May Need Skin Cancer Surgery

There are several warning signs that make skin cancer easy to spot. One warning sign is when the borders of a mole become asymmetrical and start to spread. Another indicator that a skin blemish could be cancerous is if there is a change in sensation of the suspected area; it could start to itch, feel tender, or be painful. It is important to visit a doctor if these symptoms are experienced. A doctor can assess the situation by performing an examination and determining the next course of action. If skin cancer is found on the body, surgery is often used as a means of removal. We recommend having a total body skin exam once a year.
