Lasers can be used to deliver heat to a highly focused area inside a spider vein. The heat collapses the wall of the vein, closing it off. Over the following weeks, the body slowly absorbs the non-functional vein and it disappears. Blood flow is re-routed through other veins, maintaining normal circulatory function. We are proud to use Lumenis One™ for laser vein removal at our office in Birmingham.
What is a Spider Vein?
Veins are vessels that return blood to the heart. Veins in the legs use one-way valves and the pumping action of the calf muscle to fight gravity to return the blood to the heart. However, sometimes the process malfunctions and the blood pools in the vein, causing it to enlarge and become visible through the skin. Severe varicose veins can also cause pain, a heavy feeling in the leg, and sometimes ulcers in the skin. Spider veins are basically small varicose veins; sometimes they form on their own, as is common when they form on the face, and others are small veins that become distended due to blood backing up in a large varicose vein.
What Causes Spider Veins?
Inherited factors appear to be involved in the formation of spider veins, particularly for ones that form on the face. They primarily affect women, suggesting that female hormones are involved. Standing for long hours at work, wearing high heels, obesity, and insufficient exercise can all contribute to the development of spider veins in the legs.
