Dealing with an Allergy You Didn’t Expect

June 4, 2018 by billing@pinnaclederm.com

Sensitive skin doesn’t let you get away with much, and using gentle products is essential for comfort. If you’ve been using skin care products made for sensitive or allergic skin, then it can be a real shock to wake up one day with a rash. After going over what you’ve been exposed to, to eliminate obvious culprits, you may find that the only possible allergy you have must have been something in the skin care products themselves. But these are all labeled with terms like “hypoallergenic.” So how could they cause an allergic reaction? Our team at Pinnacle Dermatology is here to help you.

It is important to realize that you can develop allergies at any point in your life, even to things that didn’t bother you before. This is why, in so many areas of the country, people will warn newcomers that they have a few years of good health, and then they’ll develop at least one allergy to a local pollen. In the case of skin care products and other unexpected things, sometimes your skin decides it just no longer likes the product, and it tells you in a rather stark way.

The word “hypoallergenic” looks like it means that it won’t cause a reaction, but all it really means is that you’ll be less likely to develop one. So, if you’ve become that unlucky person who has developed an allergy to that lower-allergen item, it’s time to investigate and schedule a consultation at our office.

If you have developed a rash that you think is due to a skin care product or some other type of product, make an appointment with our dermatologist immediately. You and the doctor can discuss everything you’ve been using. Sometimes it’s relatively easy to figure out the cause; for example, chemical sunscreens that absorb into the skin are a common cause of rashes even though the screens have been formulated to be gentle.

But other times it’s not so easy, and you’ll have to undergo allergy testing or undertake an elimination regimen. One way or another, you and our dermatologist will find out what is causing the issue and what you need to avoid using. As for a treatment to address your reaction, we can customize it for you based on your needs.

The experts at Pinnacle Dermatology can help you find out what’s causing that allergic reaction. Contact us today to set up an appointment at our Birmingham office.
