Acne Treatments for Teens and Adults

March 20, 2017 by Pinnacle Dermatology

Acne Treatments

Acne is a skin condition that is most famous for appearing during the teenage years. However, it is not exclusive to teens. Many adults struggle with acne as well. Regardless of the age of the person, dealing with it can be rather frustrating at times. In addition, if it is not treated promptly and correctly, your skin can develop acne scars.

Hormonal changes can often lead to the development of acne. The pores can become clogged and things like blackheads and whiteheads can form as a response. Also, adults can be susceptible to acne problems as their skin becomes drier and is more likely to cause clogging in the pores. For those dealing with hormonal changes that are causing acne, a hormone-related medicine may be prescribed for acne treatment.

Here at Pinnacle Dermatology, we also offer a variety of topical treatment options. These acne treatments work to prevent breakouts and can be effective in eliminating acne-causing bacteria. Some common topical treatments that may be prescribed are benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, and retinoids.

Acne can also become inflamed, red and, in most cases, painful. If you have acne that has become inflamed, you should waste no time in getting acne treatment so that it can’t become even more serious. For inflamed and red acne, typically prescription medications are prescribed. These antibiotics can be used to help treat inflammation.

If acne that is inflamed progresses even further, it can become infected and turn into a type of cystic acne. This is the most serious type because it frequently leads to scarring. Acne scars are typically permanent and can only be removed with some type of skin rejuvenation treatment. If you have cystic acne, you know that it can also be painful to deal with. Our medical team can help you treat your cystic acne by using extraction and drainage treatments.

Chemical peels can also be used to effectively treat your acne. A chemical peel can treat whiteheads and blackheads, as well as diminish wrinkling, age spots, roughness and more.

To find what acne treatment option is right for you, we encourage you to come into our office at Pinnacle Dermatology to see our medical team. Our team will examine your skin and recommend one of the many acne treatment options we offer to help you get clearer skin. Contact us today to make an appointment in Birmingham!
